The 26 parties that make up the Opposition revealed their alliance on Tuesday after a four-hour meeting. They called themselves INDIA, which stands for Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance. For the 2024 election, they set the BJP against the rest of the nation. According to reports, the leaders had already settled on the name before the conference began. 

Last week, Modi’s political opponents did just that when they established a new coalition dubbed “INDIA” with the goal of defeating Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the next election.

Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance is an alliance of 26 political parties that are opposed to the government. With general elections scheduled for May, the coalition may attract further parties.

The Indian National Congress, a party that has historically dominated Indian politics, is now in power. At a two-day conference of the alliance in Bengaluru on July 18–19, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi framed the upcoming election as a fight between “Narendra Modi and INDIA, his ideology and INDIA.” Indians have a 100% victory rate in battle.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which governs the important state of West Bengal, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which governs the state of Tamil Nadu in the south, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which governs the states of Delhi and Punjab, are the other main opposition parties that make up INDIA.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its allies dominate adjoining Jharkhand, while the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) administer the important eastern state of Bihar.

In the almost ten years that Modi has been in power in India, the country’s economy has faltered, unemployment has increased, Hindu nationalists have targeted the country’s minorities, notably Muslims, and there has been less room for political opposition and free media.

In response to the coalition, the BJP has said that its members are “self-serving, corrupt, dynastic parties.”

“the only common thread that unites them [opposition parties] is the pursuit of power,” party spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan told Al Jazeera.

They don’t care about the country’s progress or anything else that has to do with the country. The desire for power, corruption, and dynasty are the only things they have in common.
